Everything You Need to Know About

Hip Pain

Q.  What causes hip pain?

A.  Hip pain poses a difficult problem for patients because there are some many different causes for the condition.  Some of the most common causes include:

·       Arthritis – Osteoarthritis (OA) is a result of degenerative changes “wear and tear” in the hip joint over a period of time.

·       Sprain / Strain – Sprained ligaments or strained muscles and tendons can produce a significant amount of pain but usually heal quickly.

·       Disc herniations – herniated spinal discs can cause nerve pressure which often results in radiating hip pain.

·       Pinched nerves – Compression and irritation to a nerve in the lower back commonly results in pain into the hip region.

·       Sciatica – Condition of the sciatic nerve that often sends pain to the hip

·       Fractures – broken pelvic bone or femur.  Pain is usually severe.

·       Bursitis – Inflammation of a bursa (fluid filled capsule)

·       Tendonitis – Inflammation of a muscle tendon

·       Hernia – Can cause pain in the hip, lower back, and inguinal area.

·       Osteoporosis – Decrease in bone density.  Affects women more often than men.

·       Avascular necrosis – decrease blood supply that kills bone tissue.

·       Kidney stone or infection – often refers pain to the low back, hips, and flank area (love handles).

Q.  What are some common symptoms associated with hip pain?

A.  Thousands of people experience hip pain on a daily basis.  Many of these people describe their symptoms as:

Dull aching pain                                        Tightness or stiffness

Sharp shooting pain                                  Burning pain

Nagging                                                     Pain that travels into leg

Numbness and tingling                    Radiating pain

Pain while standing or walking                Inability to bend hip

Pain while resting or sitting                     Low back pain

Sciatica                                                      Muscle soreness

Q.  Who suffers from hip pain?

A.  People of all ages are susceptible to hip pain.  Even children of young ages can injure a hip while playing, or develop more serious conditions such as Dysplasia (hips dislocated or out of position), or Legg-Calve Perthes Disease.  Athletes will frequently experience hip injuries as they demand more of their muscles, ligaments, and joints than inactive people.  In addition, many low back pain sufferers are likely to also experience symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and sciatica into the buttocks, hips, and legs.  And finally, older people are at a greater risk of developing arthritis and osteoporosis in the hip.

Q.  Why do most doctors have a hard time treating hip pain?

A.  Hip pain is often very difficult to treat due to the wide variety of causes.  Narrowing down and properly diagnosing the condition can take some time, but is essential before treatment can be successful.  The approach of traditional medicine usually involves treating the symptom (pain, numbness, tingling) with drugs like pain killers, anti-inflammatories, and steroid injections.  This method can provide temporary relief of symptoms but completely neglects the cause of the condition.  When this approach is taken, patients feel a need to rely on the drugs long term, symptoms often return, the condition can worsen, and surgical intervention is more likely.  Overlooking the etiology (root cause) of the hip pain can waste valuable time, and cause more harm than good.

Q.  What should I do my hip pain persists?

A.  Setting up an appointment with your Chiropractor is the first step.  Chiropractic care is considered one of the most highly effective means of treating and curing hip pain.  In our office, we perform a thorough consultation and exam to diagnose your condition and help you rule out serious problems such as disc herniations, pinched nerves, sciatica etc.  Sending patients out for specialized tests (MRIs, EMGs, CT scans, bone scans, etc.) are sometimes necessary to establish an accurate understanding of the condition.  In addition, we have an incredible team of physicians that consist of many of the areas leading specialists of which we refer to ensure your health care needs are met.

Q.  What are some of the best treatments for hip pain?

A.  There are several remedies that seem to work best for hip pain. Remember, identifying the problem in its early stages increases the chances of successful prevention, management, and/or treatment.  The following are some treatment options that you should consider discussing with your doctor:

·       Rest – Minimize aggravating activities, or avoid them altogether.

·       Ice – Reduces pain and inflammation

·       Stretching – Increasing flexibility of muscles and ligaments.

·       Chiropractic – Removes nerve pressure, pain, and inflammation responsible for many hip pain conditions.

·       NSAIDs – Anti-inflammatory medications reduce swelling and inflammation but can have significant side effects with extended use.

·       Narcotics – pain killers will help take the edge off but can give the false illusion that the problem is fixed, and further damage can result.

·       Physical Therapy – Ultrasound, muscle stimulation, therapeutic exercises etc.

·       Surgery – Hip replacement, hernia, disc herniation, etc.

   Always the last option!

Q.  What can I expect at my first visit to the Chiropractor?

A.  An initial visit to our office will always begin with a warm welcome.  A thorough history will be reviewed with the Doctor to determine the patient’s chief complaints, symptomatic review, and current and past health issues.  An examination will then follow, checking range of motion, muscle and bone palpation, and any necessary orthopedic or neurological tests.  X-rays will also be taken when warranted.  Before performing any treatments, we take great pride in a explaining the x-rays findings, diagnosis, and if the condition can be helped with Chiropractic care.
